Flordaguard Rootstock

All stone fruit grown in Florida are grafted to rootstock because of the presence of the peach root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne floridensis). ‘Flordaguard’ is a nematode-resistant rootstock that is currently recommended for both commercial and backyard production by the University of Florida. The distinctive red leaves of ‘Flordaguard’ allow growers to easily identify it in the nursery as root suckers emerge during the first 2 to 3 years after planting.

Peachy Peach Knowledge

Peach Tips

Skinning The Peach: Great news, when cooking, canning, or baking Florida peaches you do not remove the skins. Just Ignore that step in your recipe! Florida peaches have thin skins, you will never know they have not been skinned

Washing Your peaches: Do not wash your peaches until you are ready to use them. The peach fuzz helps to maintain their freshness.
Washing and putting them in the fridge for later will cause them to go bad rapidly.

Know Your Peach Variety

Melting Flesh: These varieties are jucy but have a shorter shelf-life. They are excellent for eating fresh, brewing, brewing, fermenting, and making jams and jelles. They will not hold their structure during canning. When they get over ripe, they can llterally melt or liquify.

Non-Melting Flesh: These varieties are firmer and they have a longer shelf-life. These peaches stay firm, remember ripeness is determined by color, not by softness. These peaches are great for fresh eating, canning: jams, jellies, freezings, brewing, the skles the limit!

Important Terms

Chill Units: These are units required for chilling to produce optimum crops. One unit = 1 hour below 45*F but above 32″F that are accumulated over the winter.  See the map to determine chill hours in your area.

Fruit Development Period (FDP): This Is the period from the peak time of bloom to the peak of harvest time.
Cling and Non-cling: Florid peaches are not classified by cling/free stone. They are classifed melting and non-melting.
